CEMETERY UPDATE PROJECT!

The local members of the Genealogy Society are well underway with the Cemetery project started in 2002. The majority of the cemeteries have been visited and rechecked and written copies made for those cemeteries.

Before this project was started we visited with Tim & Helen Marsh who first surveyed the cemeteries of Lincoln and Moore Counties and published their findings in the early 1970s. Our goal was to revisit only those cemeteries that have been used since the Marsh book was published. With their permission we will use their findings for the cemeteries that have remained unused. Many of the small family cemeteries on private property have been destroyed and can not be found today.
Although no deadline has been set, hopefully we can complete the field work in 2008.

Many thanks to all those who have spent many hours visiting cemeteries.

The following Goals were set:

  • To revisit all active cemeteries and verify existing inscriptions.
  • To include the cemeteries that are on or near state and counties lines.
  • To include Moore County if possible.
  • Add all new grave sites with updated information.
  • Note new markers / monuments for old graves.
  • Make digital photos of all cemeteries.
  • Update directions to cemeteries that may have had road names changed due to 911.
  • To include all cemeteries possible both black and white.
  • To provide a written copy that can be continuously updated for all major cemeteries. (Most rural cemeteries do not have written records).
  • To enhance cemetery records with genealogical information when possible.
  • To enter all information into a master data base.
  • To make available to the public, written copies in book form and Cds.
  • To not set a deadline in order to ensure that all cemeteries are included.
